Arsenal v Stoke City: match preview

Arsenal v Stoke City: match preview

This is a bigger game for Stoke than Arsenal, with the home team having one eye on Thursday’s Europa League tie against CSKA Moscow. Stoke are winless in seven and have scored only four goals during that sequence; the lack of cutting edge – together with individual errors – has undermined some fighting football. The run-in feels unkind, although they do have West Ham, Crystal Palace and Swansea to come. Anything from this would be a huge bonus. David Hytner

Football transfer rumours: Chelsea in pole to sign Robert Lewandowski?

Football transfer rumours: Chelsea in pole to sign Robert Lewandowski?

Today’s rumours are having a good Friday

Following his eye-catching hat-trick in Spain’s 6-1 demolition of Argentina, Isco celebrated by voicing his general discontent with his current lot at Real Madrid. “When a footballer doesn’t feel like he has a leading role and consistent playing time with his club, the national team gives him life,” he said, going on to add that Zinedine Zidane isn’t giving him the consistent playing time he needs. In the interests of harmony the Spanish playmaker tactfully added that “the problem is mine and I have to be able to earn it”, but managed to imply that the three goals he’d just fired past Willy Caballero are all the evidence anyone in their right mind should need to know he’s well worth a regular place in Zizou’s starting XI.

It’s difficult to imagine any club bar the one that currently employs him not being delighted to have a player of Isco’s undeniable talents, so it’s little surprise that reports in the back pages suggest his comments have piqued the interest of several top-end English sides who hope they might be able to get him on the cheap. Pep Guardiola is said to have already approached Real with a view to rehoming Isco at Manchester City, while Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also fancy their chances of signing the £88m-rated star.

Gareth Southgate looking to add edge to England’s impressive defensive work

Football | The Guardian
Gareth Southgate looking to add edge to England’s impressive defensive work

• Manager says goals will come as players adapt to playing system
• ‘We will create more chances the more the guys play together’

Gareth Southgate believes England will find their cutting edge as they grow more accustomed to the fluid style of play being encouraged by the coaching staff, with the manager eager to use the friendly against Italy as a gauge of his team’s development.

There will be a handful of England changes from the win in the Netherlands on Friday but Southgate, who was still contemplating the makeup of his side on Monday night, has suggested the formation and approach will not differ. The side will undertake further shape work on Tuesday morning, with Italy, who will be absent from the World Cup and are under the temporary stewardship of the Under-21s coach Luigi Di Biagio, expected to press more aggressively and test their hosts’ new-found comfort on the ball.

Football transfer rumours: Paul Pogba to join Real Madrid or PSG?

Football transfer rumours: Paul Pogba to join Real Madrid or PSG?

Today’s fluff is being used as bait

José Mourinho hasn’t upset anyone for the past 48 hours so he plans to put this right by attaching Paul Pogba to a rod and dangling him in front of some of Europe’s biggest fish, in the hope they will gobble up the France midfielder and offer Manchester United some tasty treats in exchange. Apparently, the club have had enough of Pogba appearing to be more enthusiastic about posting pictures of his hair on Instagram than he is about tracking back and are targeting a host of players to rebuild the squad if they can recoup a chunk of the £89m they gave Juventus for him.

Toni Kroos and Raphaël Varane are key targets if Real Madrid bite, and pocket-sized Italian trickster Marco Veratti and Brazilian defender Marquinhos would be offered the chance to join Mourinho’s Manchester Fun House if PSG took Pogba back to France. United would also have a nibble at Neymar if the Brazilian is allowed to leave by the club’s Qatari owners.

Football transfer rumours: Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG circle around Salah?

Football transfer rumours: Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG circle around Salah?

Today’s fluff wants it over and done with

The Mill’s loyal phone box-full of devotees know that you can’t have too much of a good thing. Unfortunately for Liverpool the problem is increasingly that you can’t have enough of one. Fresh from selling Philippe Coutinho – or the poor man’s Christian Eriksen – to Barcelona they are bracing themselves for what transfer parlance would term another “raid” on their current star asset.

That piece of goods is, of course, the remarkable Mohamed Salah – and now that he has been selfish enough to grab 37 goals for club and country by mid-March the rest of us will have to suffer an excruciating summer in which he is linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain on a daily basis. All three are said to want the masterful Egyptian, and all three would probably be told a world-record offer is what is would take to get their man. If it’s going to happen, we can pray it happens quickly.

Leicester City v Chelsea: match preview

Football | The Guardian
Leicester City v Chelsea: match preview

An intriguing tie that brings together two clubs who have had contrasting experiences in Spain this week. While Leicester’s players enjoyed some warm-weather training in Marbella, Chelsea were being given the run around by Lionel Messi in Barcelona. That Champions League exit means it is the FA Cup or bust for Chelsea this season, and getting to the semi-finals will be no easy task. Leicester were unlucky not to win when the clubs met at Stamford Bridge two months ago and last week’s 4-1 win at West Brom was a timely confidence boost. Stuart James

FA Cup, Premier League and more: 10 things to look out for this weekend

FA Cup, Premier League and more: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Wigan seek to wreck Hughes’ Saints debut, FA Cup a big deal for Chelsea and Leicester, and Zaha returns to lift Palace’s spirits

It is tempting to suggest that Mark Hughes has already made the biggest contribution that he can make to Southampton’s fight against relegation – in the form of his final 18 months at Stoke – but Sunday’s FA Cup joust with Wigan gives him a chance to start showing that he has the knowhow to stimulate an improvement at his new club. At Stoke he initially wrought good performances from mercurial types and he will have to do that quicksmart with Southampton, where the likes of Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and Sofiane Boufal have lacked consistency all season. Hughes also needs to get Mario Lemina playing further forward – there is really no need for him to keep taking the ball off Southampton’s centre-backs just outside his own area – and, most of all, the new manager should play with two strikers, a ploy to which his predecessor, Mauricio Pellegrino, was reluctant to commit. While Hughes tries to make a difference fast, Wigan will stick to the same approach that has already enabled them to oust Bournemouth, West Ham and Manchester City from the FA Cup this season. PD

Goalkeeper included on final list for two friendliesMitch Langerak, Jamie Maclaren and Alex Gersbach omitted

Goalkeeper Brad Jones has returned from four years in the international wilderness as Bert van Marwijk finalised his first squad as Socceroos coach. Van Marwijk has picked Jones ahead of fellow goalkeeper Mitch Langerak in a 26-man squad for friendlies against Norway and Colombia later this month.

Stalwart Tim Cahill has been included despite limited game-time for Millwall while Czech Republic-based defender Aleksandar Šušnjar has also survived van Marwijk’s first cut. The newly-appointed Dutch manager dropped Langerak, striker Jamie Maclaren and Alex Gersbach from the initial list of 29 named last week.
