Per Mertesacker: ‘It gives you the goose bumps ... on the pitch you see actual joy’
Arsenal’s new academy head launches a Save the Children programme at a refugee camp in Jordan and finds a pure love of football intact in spite of all the youngsters have been through

As a footballer who used to be assailed by anxiety before matches, Per Mertesacker felt the butterflies rising as he made his approach to a pitch with a difference. He spent much of the hour-long drive from Amman, the capital of Jordan, to Zaatari, one of the largest refugee camps on earth, wondering what to expect. Mertesacker is a deep thinker and his mind whirred. “It gives you the goose bumps,” he says. “You are a little bit depressed to go there. You have respect and know it is important for everything to sink in. When you arrive it’s tight, very hot and very dry. And then you go to a football pitch and see actual joy.” The collision of that joy with the hardship and trauma around it strikes him profoundly.

Jack Wilshere will miss around six weeks for West Ham after ankle surgery

• Hammers won their first match on Sunday, without him
• Midfielder handed a three-year deal on Pellegrini’s insistence

West Ham have been dealt a blow after it emerged that Jack Wilshere will be out for up to six weeks following surgery on an ankle injury.

It had been hoped that Wilshere would not require an operation after he sustained a sprained ankle in training last week. Yet the problem was serious enough to keep the midfielder out of his club’s victory at Everton on Sunday and he is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after having a minor procedure on Monday.

Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Ryan Fraser ran Leicester ragged; Neil Warnock will not tolerate more Cardiff mistakes; and Rafael Benítez needs a new plan

Jürgen Klopp was asked to describe his emotions during stoppage time in the 2-1 victory at Tottenham. His dominant Liverpool team had led 2-0 going into it but they conceded to Érik Lamela in the 93rd minute to set up a nervy finale. “I would love to say it is the first time in my life I have been in a situation like that but it happens so often,” Klopp said. “My wife hates it.” The Liverpool manager would not have gone through the wringer if some of his players – Sadio Mané, in particular – had played in a teammate when they ought to have done. If there was one criticism of Liverpool’s best performance of the season it was the lack of ruthlessness and, even, traces of greediness. “It’s not greedy,” Klopp argued. “I want them to score and encourage them to do so. But there are moments when they have to pass.” David Hytner

Hull City’s Ehab Allam: ‘We are detached emotionally from the fans’

The club’s co-owner is keen to sell up amid a toxic time at the KCom Stadium and believes a deal to do so may be imminent

It is the afternoon of 29 August, the day after a record-low crowd of 4,666 witnessed Hull crash to a 4-0 home defeat to Derby in the Carabao Cup. That number, Hull’s lowest attendance at the KCom Stadium – their home since Boxing Day 2002 – paints part of the grim picture of dislocation that has formed between supporters and the father and son pairing that assumed ownership of the club in 2010.

They are hardly playing happy families, and talking during this rare interview in his office following a meeting with the manager, Nigel Adkins, the vice-chairman, Ehab Allam, suggests Hull could be sold before Christmas. Allam is in discussions with potential buyers over a sale that would be music to the ears of many fans.

Football transfer rumours: Aston Villa to lure back John Terry with new deal?

Football transfer rumours: Aston Villa to lure back John Terry with new deal?

Today’s tittle-tattle is paving over paradise

“Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got til it’s gone,” asked Joni Mitchell in 1970, in a hit that has since been covered by more two-bit hack buskers (yes you, Bob Dylan) than the Rumour Mill cares to mention. Steve Bruce could be next to have a bash, having realised that life at Villa Park without John Terry is no life at all. The 38-year-old was instrumental in getting Aston Villa to last year’s Championship play-off final, only to be released when Bruce’s side came up short at Wembley and couldn’t afford to keep him on. Now without a club, he may be offered a new contract at Villa Park following reports that the new owners, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, have sanctioned a deal.

The Manchester United midfielder and emergency centre-back Ander Herrera is considering his options and may agitate for a move from Old Trafford in January, if speculation in the Metro is to be believed. The Spaniard is reported to be unhappy that United are dilly-dallying over offering him a new and improved deal and might go somewhere where his services will be more appreciated. Alternatively, he is hoping someone at Old Trafford will read reports that he is unhappy, stick a juicy contract under his nose and hand him a pen.

10.33am BST

Remember, folks, many managerial greats have served at Notts County early in careers that would later be described as illustrious, including Sam Allardyce, Neil Warnock and Howard Wilkinson. But other Kewell predecessors have left feeling they were treated unjustly, from Kevin Nolan to Tommy Lawton, who, back in 1958, agreed to go without pay for six months to ease the financial pressure on the club - and then, when they were relegated by a point, he was unceremoniously sacked.

10.25am BST

Notts County have appointed Harry Kewell as their new manager after agreeing compensation with Crawley, whom the Australian led to 14th in League Town last season. That’s the same position they sit in this season after seven matches, while Notts County are sprawled on their backsides at the foot of the table with a solitary point.

Wales semi-pros aim to shock England and seal women's World Cup place

The hosts take on Phil Neville’s Lionesses at Rodney Parade on Friday knowing a win will secure a place in France

Gwennan Harries harbours mixed emotions. Almost simultaneously she feels a little bit nervous, extremely excited, cautiously optimistic and, most definitely, envious. “It’s the biggest game in our history,” says the former leading Wales striker as she prepares for BBC punditry duties at Rodney Parade where, on Friday, Jayne Ludlow’s side face Phil Neville’s England. “I would have loved to have played in a match of this magnitude.”

Harries is not guilty of hyperbole. After all, Ludlow’s predominantly semi-professional Wales are a point ahead of the vaunted, fully professional Lionesses at the top of the pair’s World Cup qualifying group. Only one side are guaranteed automatic qualification.

Football transfer rumours: Real Madrid to try again for Eden Hazard?

Today’s tittle-tattle didn’t get the ending

A player who makes no secret of his ambitions to move elsewhere while simultaneously giving every appearance of being perfectly content where he is, Eden Hazard will be the subject of one more bid from Real Madrid before the European transfer window shuts at the end of the month. Hazard has already said he won’t be going anywhere this season, while Real’s advances for his Chelsea team-mate Marcos Alonso are also likely to be rebuffed.

Should he stay or should he go now? That’s the question Manchester United fans are asking about Anthony Martial, who is reported to have performed “a stunning U-turn on his Manchester United future”. Despite his agent’s insistence that his client wanted to leave Old Trafford, it’s being reported that Martial has decided to stay and fight for his place under José Mourinho, who the Star say is hell bent on getting rid of a player he seems to have found guilty of gross insubordination earlier this summer. With so many pundits of a mind that Mourinho is currently orchestrating his own exit from Old Trafford, Martial may well have decided to sit tight and wait to see what happens next.

Crystal Palace v Liverpool: match preview

Liverpool have won their past four trips to Selhurst Park in all competitions, though they will still consider this a distinctly awkward fixture. Crystal Palace have been buoyed by the contracts signed by Roy Hodgson and Wilfried Zaha and have not lost in the 13 Premier League matches with James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho at in the centre of defence. They are unbeaten in seven top-flight games either side of the summer, too. That suggests this will be a test of the visitors’ credentials as title challengers as they seek to ensure Manchester City do not sprint clear from the outset. Dominic Fifield

Football transfer rumours: Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Milan or Juve?

Today’s fluff starts with an earthquake

A little over a week after the drama, excitement and largely underwhelming-apart-from-Everton actuality of England’s transfer deadline day it is Italy’s turn to bring the curtain down on the summer market. They have until the clock strikes eight in Rome on Friday to complete their business, and the day dawns with one particularly big name – in more ways than one – the subject of heightened speculation.

It looks like Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, the young Lazio midfielder so frequently linked with the Premier League’s power hitters in the early summer, is going to make a big-money move. Milan are apparently in the driving seat, with rumours circulating that they have struck a €40m loan deal with Lazio that includes a right to make the deal permanent if they feel like it, though Tuttosport believes that Juventus will rival them for the Serb’s signature and the Gazzetta dello Sport thinks Adrien Rabiot could end up in Milan instead.

FC Nordsjaelland are giving 1% of their matchday revenue to Common Goal – and that’s not all of their charitable work

By Richard Foster, author of The Agony and the Ecstasy

A year has passed since Juan Mata launched Common Goal, which asks its members to donate 1% of their income to global humanitarian projects. Mats Hummels, Kasper Schmeichel, Giorgio Chiellini, Alex Morgan and Alfie Mawson are among the 94 individuals who have signed up and this summer they have been joined by the first football club to take part.

FC Nordsjaelland gave 1% of their matchday revenue to Common Goal for the first time when they welcomed Northern Irish side Cliftonville to Denmark for a Europa League qualifier a fortnight ago. They will do the same when they host Partizan Belgrade this week in the next round and will continue to give away 1% of the money they make in their stadium at every home game they play this season.

Football | The Guardian
Football transfer rumours: Yerry Mina to seal Manchester United move?

This morning’s fluff is trapped between the toes

If José Mourinho has a smile on his face today, it will not be because the Manchester United manager is delighted to see Anthony Martial back at training. Nor will it be because the thought of playing for Mourinho holds zero appeal for Real Madrid’s Mateo Kovacic, who probably heard about Martial facing a fine of up to £180,000 for awarding himself some paternity leave after the birth of his son. No, the reason for the United manager’s grin is because Yerry Mina, Barcelona’s £35m centre-back, is set to become the latest member of José’s happy family.

Everton also liked the look of Mina, who showed an eye for goal during Colombia’s run to the last 16 of the World Cup, but Marco Silva reckons that the 23-year-old is out of reach and will hand United £30m for Marcos Rojo instead. Mina’s arrival will also allow United to sell Chris Smalling to Wolves and another player who could be heading for the Old Trafford exit is Paul Pogba, although Barcelona’s technical director, Eric Abidal, has denied holding talks with his fellow Frenchman. Watch this space.

That will be followed by both La Liga and Serie A football, pinched from under the noses of Sky Sports and BT Sports respectively. For some fans, who already pay for one or both of those services, this development will be like taking a rabbit punch to the wallet.

Football has a diversity problem – here’s my blueprint for change

Raj Athwal, who worked for over 20 years in commercial roles at clubs including Watford and Rangers, says in this extract from his book the game must do more for the BAME community

I am constantly questioned about the dearth of Asians in British football, on and off the pitch. Is the lack of representation due to discrimination or other untoward reasons? Certain factors need to be highlighted, challenged and addressed. I will try to offer a balanced view from my personal experiences of how the industry operates – which is not always what it appears to be when on the outside looking in.

On the pitch we are witnessing significantly more Asian players at academy and youth level than ever before. This has as much to do with British-born Asian parents who understand and respect the professional game encouraging their kids to play as with the development and increase of BAME coaches.
