Football transfer rumours: Arsenal to sign Kingsley Coman from Bayern?

Today’s tittle-tattle is livin’ on a prayer

French players are hot property right now. Even ones, it seems, that didn’t go to Russia and conquer the world. Kingsley Coman, a man with a name that belongs on Game of Thrones, is in Arsenal’s crosshairs, with Unai Emery intent on bringing some pace to the flanks to make up for the fact that he signed Stephan Lichtsteiner. The Bayern Munich winger won’t come cheap though, with reports of a £44m price asking price being bandied around.

Monaco are trying to snaffle Aleksandr Golovin from under Chelsea’s nose by sending their chief Russian suit, Vadim Vasilyev – the man responsible for finding former Rumour Mill favourite Thomas Lemar – to vodka and dine his CSKA Moscow counterpart. “When we receive an offer, we always try to negotiate openly,” said CSKA’s president, Yevgeny Giner. “Indeed, we were visited by the vice-president of Monaco and made a proposal for Golovin. Chelsea? We have no secret agreement with them. The question of his transition to another club will be decided, I think, in the next couple of days.”

Oh my...

There is the suggestion tonight from several sources that during the on-pitch trophy celebrations, Steven N'Zonzi had to ask certain players to let N'Golo Kanté hold the World Cup trophy because the man himself was too shy to ask & didn't want to impose on anyone. What a hero.

Tired of talking about whether they’re tired, Zlatko Dalic insists there are no excuses for his Croatia side. After three rounds of extra-time, and two penalty shootouts, he has had to answer countless questions over his side’s fitness, batting away fears over freshness. “France are very dangerous on the counter-attack,” he says. “We had a tough journey to the final, but there are no excuses, we are ready for the last game of the tournament.” As for his last words to his squad at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow a little later, he’ll be keeping it simple. “I will say ‘have fun, guys’. I want my players to enjoy themselves. I am very proud of them.”

More REAL WORLD news. A good feature, this, seeing nothing much is happening because nearly everyone’s gone home. “Actually, the Scottish League Cup actually started in earnest last night, with the mighty Killie playing out a thrilling 0-0 draw with St Mirren,” reports Stephen Black. “No boring extra-time, instead straight to penalties which probably weren’t necessary, seeing as Killie have a penalty shootout record which even England would mock. Inevitably, St Mirren took the bonus point, and even this early on in the season you’ll be hard pressed to see a worse effort from the spot than Gary Dicker’s.” Waddlesque!

England are gearing up for that Colombia test on Tuesday night in Moscow, but what can Gareth Southgate’s squad expect from a team regarded as dark horses in some quarters and derided as poor in others, namely Paul Merson. Dejan Lovren is fond of telling it the way he sees it. And the big Croatia defender reckons his teammate Luka Modric should be in the running for the world’s best player of the year award - but he’s likely to miss out because he doesn’t play for one of the traditional international superpowers. “Modric would probably be getting more attention than he is right now if he was a German or Spanish player he would maybe even be a Ballon D’Or winner,” Lovren says. “Because we are a smaller country, he does get less attention than he deserves.”

The Serbian FA are on a rolling boil. They’re not happy with referee Felix Brych’s officiating during their dramatic 2-1 loss to Switzerland, and have accordingly whined to Fifa in the official style.

We have submitted seven video recordings clearly showing Brych’s tendency to make decisions against our national team. The footage reveals Brych’s double standards in brandishing yellow cards, as he was quick to book our key players while he didn’t do the same in similar situations at the other end. The most glaring poor decision was not awarding Serbia a penalty for a foul on Aleksandar Mitrovic with the score 1-1, and awarding the spot kick could have turned the match our way. The whole world saw the penalty except Brych and it should have gone to VAR analysis. We are wondering why Serbia is the only team in the World Cup where the match official chose to ignore controversial situations at it raises the legitimate question whether the VAR is being used selectively.

As World Cup controversies go, England’s scrapofpapergate isn’t exactly Bobby Moore and the bracelet in Bogota, is it. Jamie Vardy is also of the opinion that it’s a transient confection, like confetti on the wind. “All that is saying is telling our next opponents we’ve got 23 players in the squad and letting them know their names again,” he reasons. “We find out the team on the morning of the game or the night before and until the gaffer names the team that’s the way it is.”

8.46am BST

Good news for England ahead of their big game against Panama in Nizhny Novgorod tomorrow lunchtime. Dele Alli is back in training. He’d suffered a minor thigh strain against Tunisia. Whether the 22-year-old Spurs midfielder will be risked this weekend is another matter, not least because Ruben Loftus-Cheek impressed during his brief cameo upon replacing Alli on Monday night, so he might have been benched anyway. But it’s always nice to have options, isn’t it.

Mo Salah’s first appearance at a World Cup could well prove his last, unless Egypt qualify for Qatar 2022 of course. The Liverpool forward’s late penalty was merely a consolation in a damning defeat to the hosts. His coach, Héctor Cúper lamented that Salah had not been in a position to be more influential in the past few weeks. “I would have liked him to have been present at the training camp with everybody else,” he said. “We didn’t have him against Uruguay. We did here [against Russia]. But it wasn’t enough.” Was he 100% fit? “I was told the player was feeling good. He couldn’t prepare with us in all the sessions, trained alone, so perhaps his total physical ability was slightly reduced. But I was convinced he was at optimal level.”

Cautionary tale of Irish postal worker whose gambling habit landed him in jail

Tony O’Reilly’s habit led him to steal from his employer after racking up huge losses – but his bookmakers ought to shoulder some of the blame

It was difficult to sympathise with bookmakers as they wailed over last month’s announcement that the maximum stake per spin on fixed-odds betting terminals will be cut from £100 to £2. “Won’t somebody think of the betting shop staff?” they pleaded rather disingenuously, considering a Campaign for Fairer Gambling study conducted three years ago which claimed that for every 5,000 jobs that might be created by their FOBTs, a further 25,000 are lost elsewhere.

It seemed more reasonable to conclude that what was actually upsetting the bookies was the realisation that their days of gouging the vulnerable for the equivalent of more than £5m a day, every day of the year, on these risk-free (for the bookies), highly addictive casino-style gaming machines might soon come to an end.

As Raheem Sterling knows, the media loves to hound successful black men | Maurice Mcleod
Whether its his choice of tattoo or the variation in his spending, the message to the England footballer is clear: know your place

In a little over two weeks, the World Cup finals begin in Russia. You would expect the nation’s media to be concentrating its efforts on over-hyping England’s chances and lauding our potential star players. Instead, some parts seem hell-bent on finding reasons to criticise one of the country’s top prospects, Raheem Sterling.

After scoring 18 goals from midfield for the runaway winners of this year’s Premier League, you’d expect Sterling to be one of the nation’s darlings. At the tender age of 23, he has already represented his country at two tournaments, and played key roles for two of England’s biggest teams, Liverpool and Manchester City. As a player with speed, genuine flair and an eye for goal, Sterling is a rarity in the England setup.

Football transfer rumours: Kylian Mbappé to Manchester City?

Football | The Guardian
Football transfer rumours: Kylian Mbappé to Manchester City?

Today’s fluff is lodged firmly between the toes

Let’s start with the inevitable: following suggestions that Cristiano Ronaldo may be ready to leave Real Madrid, reports of a swap with Paris Saint-Germain for Neymar have surfaced as surely as worms after rain. You can see why such a transaction might suit all parties: PSG could relieve themselves off a burden without losing more face, Real would get a super player who might tone down his demands at a bigger club, and Ronaldo could continue scoring at an absurd rate and make daily trips to the Hall of Mirrors.

If PSG could countenance losing Neymar, being forced to pull out of the deal for Kylian Mbappé would be a painful blow. But that could happen, according to new claims. Earlier this month PSG’s big cheese Nasser al-Khelaifi said the club would not consider selling the extravagantly talented young striker even for £1bn – but the thing is, he is not yet PSG’s to not sell: he spent last season with them on loan from Monaco and although PSG have an option to turn that into a permanent transfer, word is they may have to refrain from following through on that because of financial fair play restrictions. In which case Manchester City will be ready to swoop. Yay, a Qatar-funded club beaten to a player by a United Arab Emirates-funded club, that’s what financial fair play is all about!

Football transfer rumours: Jamie Vardy to Atlético Madrid?

Football | The Guardian
Football transfer rumours: Jamie Vardy to Atlético Madrid?

Today’s fluff is genuinely frightening

Defenders in La Liga might want to consider plying their trade elsewhere if Diego Simeone is successful in constructing the most terrifying frontline since the Orcs lined up to do battle in the second Lord of the Rings film. It says here that Atlético Madrid’s evil genius will offer Leicester City a good chunk of the money he expects to receive for Antoine Griezmann from Barcelona this summer in exchange for Jamie Vardy, who he has been tracking since the England striker’s impressive display in the Champions League against his club last year, to partner Diego Costa. Just imagine trying to keep a lid on those two. It would be like marking a couple of werewolves. The Mill’s come out in a cold sweat just thinking about it.

Liverpool’s Irish fanbase will be delighted to know that the club is this close to completing a deal for Lyon’s buzzy attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir, but beancounters will have to hand over £60m before the creative Fekir pitches up at Anfield. The France international could stick his boots in Emre Can’s empty locker when he gets there. The German will finally join Juventus on a free transfer when the Champions League final is over.

Per Mertesacker: ‘As Arsenal academy manager I will challenge the players’ mindsets’

In an exclusive extract from his new book, the former defender explains what he learned during his career and how footballers must do more to condition their bodies

I invested a lot in my fitness. My personal network [of therapists] cost me 10% of my net salary, several hundreds of thousands of euros. But it was absolutely the right decision and it paid off as after two seasons I extended my contract by a further three years. I wouldn’t have been able to play for a top club for seven years in the Premier League without these additional therapies.
