Football transfer rumours: Arsène Wenger to PSG or Borussia Dortmund?

This morning’s tittle-tattle is feeling the heat

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the first Mill since Arsène’s Big Announcement. You are reading history. Savour the moment. Savour the exclusivity. Print this out and frame it on your favourite wall. Although be advised: the Mill has absolutely no news to bring you regarding Arsenal’s next manager, with the press not even mustering the imagination to link Igors Stepanovs, Gunnersaurus, Nicklas Bendtner, Tim Sherwood or Claude and Ty with the hallowed vacancy. Wenger out! This is a disgrace.

Still, at least we can shed some light on where Wenger might be heading next. Paris Saint-Germain are sniffing around, offering Wenger a chance to experience Neymar’s ego, and it seems that there is also interest from Borussia Dortmund, who will look to replace Peter Stöger at the end of the season.

Football transfer rumours: Fred and Sessegnon to Manchester United?

Today’s football talk is talking down Maddison

Paul Pogba leaving Manchester United? Not even if José Mourinho recalls the Scottish player, Scott McTominay, to play in Pogba’s place at Bournemouth on Wednesday night. Instead, Pogba wants to stay to fight for his place.

It might, though, not be up to Pogba, since Mourinho has decided he wants Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred to partner McTominay in midfield. Should that be the case, then Pogba can go to Paris Saint-Germain, to whom he has been offered, though they have the small matter of a Financial Fair Play breach to think about, what with previously breaking the bank to sign Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.

Football transfer rumours: Wilfried Zaha to Manchester City?

Today’s tell-all cannot ‘unsee’ this Manchester City celebration video

Crystal Palace fans will be most unhappy to learn that Wilfried Zaha is being linked with another move to Manchester. The last player signed by Sir Alex Ferguson before he retired as manager of United, Zaha failed to settle at Old Trafford after his arrival in the summer of 2013 and played just four times for United under David Moyes before being farmed out on loan to Cardiff City and rejoining Palace two years later. The standout player in a Crystal Palace side that gave themselves a very good chance of avoiding the drop with victory over Brighton on Saturday, Zaha is wanted by Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea. However, tabloid reports suggest Pep Guardiola is also keen on bringing the 25-year-old winger to Manchester City for £50m. Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred and Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcântara may also join the ranks of this season’s newly-crowned Premier League winners.

World Cup stunning moments: Diego Maradona's Hand of God | Scott Murray

The 1986 quarter-final between England and Argentina is famous for one of football’s most iconic moments. But there was more to this goal – and match – than a single act of larceny

High noon, one blistering Sunday in Mexico City, and a quarter-final shootout between two arch rivals who hadn’t met in a World Cup for 20 years and had grievance on their minds. Rattín’s Revenge! Or, in the offices of various tabloid newspapers and the heads of the slow: Falklands II. Here are 10 things that happened during a first half everyone’s long forgotten about:

1) Just before kick-off, instead of focusing on the players warming up in the oppressive sun, the Mexican television director chose to zoom in on a topless man necking the final third of a plastic cup of lager while sucking hard on a cheroot, having clearly been caught in two minds over which craving to sate first. A wonderful tableau of the relaxed atmosphere in the Azteca before kick-off, both sets of supporters in good humour, the Argentina team handing each England player their own personal pennant. A lovely touch, a small gesture of friendship, and to think everyone had been banging on about bad blood caused by the Malvinas conflict.

Romelu Lukaku is not alone: myth of the ‘big-game bottler’ is rife | Sean Ingle
Striker was poor in United’s defeat of City in Manchester derby but time may prove he is no ‘flat-track bully’, as it has with many a player – even Cristiano Ronaldo

It was a shot heard around the world. First Cristiano Ronaldo leapt, twisted and arched his back, as if performing the Fosbury flop. Then came the crack of boot on ball, lace on leather, delirium and endless dissection.

But while Ronaldo’s stunning bicycle kick against Juventus took the breath away, watching him deliver in the Champions League – and again in the Madrid derby on Sunday – came as no surprise. Nowadays he follows the line from Ecclesiastes to the letter: What has been done before will be done again.

Neil Warnock: ‘I haven’t had a fair crack of the Premier League whip’
Neil Warnock prefers the ‘muck and nettles’ of the Championship to the top flight but a record eighth promotion of his managerial career, this time with Cardiff, would suit him just fine

Not long after Neil Warnock was named the Cardiff manager, his wife, Sharon, made a startling discovery. “She rang me and said: ‘I’ve got some news. I’ve just been on the fanzines at Cardiff – they all like you. I can’t believe it.’ I said: ‘Darling, some people do, you know.’”

They have plenty of cause to like Warnock now. Cardiff, with a squad who look like an island of lost toys in a division where money has flowed freely, are five points clear of third-placed Fulham with a game in hand. On Friday night they host the leaders, Wolves, then on Tuesday visit Aston Villa, who are fourth. Barring a calamity, Cardiff will win promotion to the Premier League. Not bad considering they were second bottom when Warnock arrived in October 2016.

Arsenal v Stoke City: match preview

This is a bigger game for Stoke than Arsenal, with the home team having one eye on Thursday’s Europa League tie against CSKA Moscow. Stoke are winless in seven and have scored only four goals during that sequence; the lack of cutting edge – together with individual errors – has undermined some fighting football. The run-in feels unkind, although they do have West Ham, Crystal Palace and Swansea to come. Anything from this would be a huge bonus. David Hytner

Football transfer rumours: Chelsea in pole to sign Robert Lewandowski?

Football transfer rumours: Chelsea in pole to sign Robert Lewandowski?

Today’s rumours are having a good Friday

Following his eye-catching hat-trick in Spain’s 6-1 demolition of Argentina, Isco celebrated by voicing his general discontent with his current lot at Real Madrid. “When a footballer doesn’t feel like he has a leading role and consistent playing time with his club, the national team gives him life,” he said, going on to add that Zinedine Zidane isn’t giving him the consistent playing time he needs. In the interests of harmony the Spanish playmaker tactfully added that “the problem is mine and I have to be able to earn it”, but managed to imply that the three goals he’d just fired past Willy Caballero are all the evidence anyone in their right mind should need to know he’s well worth a regular place in Zizou’s starting XI.

It’s difficult to imagine any club bar the one that currently employs him not being delighted to have a player of Isco’s undeniable talents, so it’s little surprise that reports in the back pages suggest his comments have piqued the interest of several top-end English sides who hope they might be able to get him on the cheap. Pep Guardiola is said to have already approached Real with a view to rehoming Isco at Manchester City, while Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also fancy their chances of signing the £88m-rated star.

Gareth Southgate looking to add edge to England’s impressive defensive work

• Manager says goals will come as players adapt to playing system
• ‘We will create more chances the more the guys play together’

Gareth Southgate believes England will find their cutting edge as they grow more accustomed to the fluid style of play being encouraged by the coaching staff, with the manager eager to use the friendly against Italy as a gauge of his team’s development.

There will be a handful of England changes from the win in the Netherlands on Friday but Southgate, who was still contemplating the makeup of his side on Monday night, has suggested the formation and approach will not differ. The side will undertake further shape work on Tuesday morning, with Italy, who will be absent from the World Cup and are under the temporary stewardship of the Under-21s coach Luigi Di Biagio, expected to press more aggressively and test their hosts’ new-found comfort on the ball.

Football transfer rumours: Paul Pogba to join Real Madrid or PSG?

Today’s fluff is being used as bait

José Mourinho hasn’t upset anyone for the past 48 hours so he plans to put this right by attaching Paul Pogba to a rod and dangling him in front of some of Europe’s biggest fish, in the hope they will gobble up the France midfielder and offer Manchester United some tasty treats in exchange. Apparently, the club have had enough of Pogba appearing to be more enthusiastic about posting pictures of his hair on Instagram than he is about tracking back and are targeting a host of players to rebuild the squad if they can recoup a chunk of the £89m they gave Juventus for him.

Toni Kroos and Raphaël Varane are key targets if Real Madrid bite, and pocket-sized Italian trickster Marco Veratti and Brazilian defender Marquinhos would be offered the chance to join Mourinho’s Manchester Fun House if PSG took Pogba back to France. United would also have a nibble at Neymar if the Brazilian is allowed to leave by the club’s Qatari owners.

Football transfer rumours: Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG circle around Salah?

Today’s fluff wants it over and done with

The Mill’s loyal phone box-full of devotees know that you can’t have too much of a good thing. Unfortunately for Liverpool the problem is increasingly that you can’t have enough of one. Fresh from selling Philippe Coutinho – or the poor man’s Christian Eriksen – to Barcelona they are bracing themselves for what transfer parlance would term another “raid” on their current star asset.

That piece of goods is, of course, the remarkable Mohamed Salah – and now that he has been selfish enough to grab 37 goals for club and country by mid-March the rest of us will have to suffer an excruciating summer in which he is linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain on a daily basis. All three are said to want the masterful Egyptian, and all three would probably be told a world-record offer is what is would take to get their man. If it’s going to happen, we can pray it happens quickly.

Leicester City v Chelsea: match preview

An intriguing tie that brings together two clubs who have had contrasting experiences in Spain this week. While Leicester’s players enjoyed some warm-weather training in Marbella, Chelsea were being given the run around by Lionel Messi in Barcelona. That Champions League exit means it is the FA Cup or bust for Chelsea this season, and getting to the semi-finals will be no easy task. Leicester were unlucky not to win when the clubs met at Stamford Bridge two months ago and last week’s 4-1 win at West Brom was a timely confidence boost. Stuart James

FA Cup, Premier League and more: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Wigan seek to wreck Hughes’ Saints debut, FA Cup a big deal for Chelsea and Leicester, and Zaha returns to lift Palace’s spirits

It is tempting to suggest that Mark Hughes has already made the biggest contribution that he can make to Southampton’s fight against relegation – in the form of his final 18 months at Stoke – but Sunday’s FA Cup joust with Wigan gives him a chance to start showing that he has the knowhow to stimulate an improvement at his new club. At Stoke he initially wrought good performances from mercurial types and he will have to do that quicksmart with Southampton, where the likes of Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and Sofiane Boufal have lacked consistency all season. Hughes also needs to get Mario Lemina playing further forward – there is really no need for him to keep taking the ball off Southampton’s centre-backs just outside his own area – and, most of all, the new manager should play with two strikers, a ploy to which his predecessor, Mauricio Pellegrino, was reluctant to commit. While Hughes tries to make a difference fast, Wigan will stick to the same approach that has already enabled them to oust Bournemouth, West Ham and Manchester City from the FA Cup this season. PD

Football transfer rumours: Robert Lewandowski to Chelsea?

Today’s tell-all loves an early-morning blast of Siberian air

The future of Robert Lewandowski has become the subject of much speculative chitter-chat in recent days, after the Bayern Munich striker dispensed with the services of his longtime agent Cezary Kucharski and jumped into bed with Pini Zahavi instead. Lewandowski, 29, has spent the thick end of a decade in Germany but his change of representation has prompted no end of talk that he’s ready to leave Bayern Munich and try his luck elsewhere. Real Madrid has been mentioned as one possible destination, while Zahavi’s close relationship with Roman Abramovich means the Polish international is also being linked with Chelsea. More accustomed to snapping up talent than letting it go, Munich is rumoured to be the next destination of Malcom, the Brazilian winger unsuccessfully courted by Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in January.

European roundup: Barcelona rout Girona as Bayern Munich held by Hertha

• Messi double, Coutinho screamer and Suárez hat-trick in 6-1 win
• Bayern’s winning run halted by Hertha in goalless Bundesliga draw

Lionel Messi, Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suárez combined to devastating effect to help Barcelona hammer Girona 6-1 and take the club 10 points clear at the top of La Liga, as well as set a club record of 32 league games unbeaten.

Portu gave Girona a shock lead in the third minute but Suárez quickly levelled, before two goals from Messi and another from the Uruguayan saw Barça march into a 4-1 half-time lead. Coutinho, who had set up Suárez’s second, then struck for the first time in La Liga with a spectacular long-range shot. Suárez completed a hat-trick when he tapped in a cutback from Ousmane Dembélé.

Mourinho says Chelsea games mean ‘less and less’ as Conte feud cools

• Two managers had angry exchange of words earlier in the season
• Portuguese admits emotional ties to Stamford Bridge are loosening

José Mourinho has admitted meetings with Chelsea mean “less and less” as his emotional ties with his former club steadily recede, with neither the Manchester United manager nor Antonio Conte prepared to reignite their feud before Sunday’s collision between their teams at Old Trafford.

The pair clashed towards the end of last year when Conte interpreted Mourinho’s criticisms of managers who “behave as a clown” on the touchline as a personal attack. The Italian responded by suggesting his counterpart might be suffering from “demenza senile”, with their war of words escalating further after the United manager appeared to reference the Chelsea head coach’s four-month ban for failing to report alleged match-fixing while working in his native Italy. Conte went on to call his opposite number “a little man” and “fake”.
